DICT, BSP advance digitatal connectivity, cashless payments in Eastern Samar

Additional gree Wi-Fi sites and the PalengQR Ph initiative were formally launched in Eastern Samar during the “Launching of ICT Projects” spearheaded by the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Region 8, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), and the provincial government.
The event was part of the celebration of National ICT Month 2026 and brought together government officials and stakeholders to support initiatives that promote digital inclusion and financial technology adoption.
During the morning session, participants attended an orientation on the Free Public Internet Access Program, which seeks to expand internet connectivity in underserved communities and improve access to online government services, education, and information.
Free Wi-Fi locations have been identified throughout the province, with implementation commencing during the initial rollout period in late 2025. The program is expected to strengthen internet access in communities across Eastern Samar.
The afternoon program also featured the launch of PalengQR Ph, a digital payment initiative of the BSP that promotes the use of QR code-based transactions among market vendors and consumers.
Representatives from the BSP conducted an orientation on the program, emphasizing its role in promoting safer, faster, and more convenient transactions while encouraging greater adoption of digital payments.
Provincial officials expressed support for initiatives that improve connectivity and expand access to digital financial services, recognizing their contribution to inclusive growth and economic development.
The launch highlights the collaborative efforts of national agencies and the provincial government in advancing digital connectivity, financial inclusion, and innovation throughout Eastern Samar. (TAC-GBP)
