In a historic leap forward for local healthcare and education, Eastern Samar State University (ESSU) officially inaugurated its College of Medicine and unveiled its official logo during a ceremony at the ESSU Main Campus on Thursday, July 2, 2026.
The milestone represents the realization of a long-standing vision to provide aspiring Estehanon doctors with the opportunity to pursue medical education closer to home while systematically strengthening the province’s future healthcare workforce.
To ensure the success of the new program, the provincial government led by Gov. RV Evardone has committed to sponsoring 10 scholars every school year, ensuring that deserving local students have a pathway to medical school regardless of their financial background.
Moreover, Gov. Evardone announced that the provincial government has allocated a ₱500 million rehabilitation fund for the Eastern Samar Provincial Hospital (ESPH).
The investment will fund the upgrade of hospital facilities and enhance practical lessons, creating a well-equipped environment for hands-on clinical training.
During the inauguration, a ceremonial enrollment was held for 11 pioneering medical students who will form the first batch of the college.
The ceremony was graced by key leaders who championed the institution’s growth, including House Minority Leader and 4Ps Party-list Representative Marcelino Libanan, ESSU President Andres Pagatpatan Jr., representatives from the Commission on Higher Education and the Tingog Partylist, Board Member Atty. PJ Evardone, various municipal mayors, and the newly appointed faculty and staff of the medical school.
