In observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) 2026, with the theme World Drug Problem: Persisting Challenges, New Threats, and Innovative Responses, barangay officials, Sangguniang Kabataan leaders, local government officials, and stakeholders from Guiuan, Salcedo, and Mercedes gathered at the Guiuan Gymnasium on June 17.
The activity was spearheaded by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Eastern Samar under Provincial Director Engr. Jesus Jeremy D. Bagares, aimed at strengthening local anti-drug initiatives and promoting safer, drug-free communities.
Resource speakers from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police led discussions on drug prevention education, barangay drug-cleared validation, and anti-illegal drug intelligence reporting.
Intelligence Agent V Josefat S. Macawile, provincial officer of PDEA Eastern Samar, discussed drug prevention education, emphasizing the effects of illegal drugs, awareness on dangerous substances, and important legal provisions related to drug enforcement.
Another PDEA representative explained the requirements and validation process for maintaining barangay drug-cleared status.
Police Maj. Aldwin A. Ballete, acting chief of the Police Drug Enforcement Unit, underscored the importance of accurate intelligence reporting, active community participation, and proper coordination with authorities in addressing illegal drug activities.
In a video message, Gov. RV Evardone expressed appreciation for the program, stressing the importance of guiding the youth toward education, sports, and productive activities, while urging them to avoid illegal drugs and other harmful practices.
Board Member Pol Gonzales, representing Rep. Sheen P. Gonzales, together with Mayor Annaliza Gonzalez-Kwan of Guiuan, Mayor Melchor Mergal of Salcedo, and Mayor Edwin Quimenales of Mercedes, reaffirmed their strong support for anti-drug programs and their commitment to maintaining peaceful and drug-free communities.
Vice Gov. Maricar Sison-Goteesan said that achieving drug-free communities requires unity and shared responsibility among government leaders and stakeholders, urging continued cooperation and vigilance.
The program was also attended by Dr. Jhonel M. Añavesa, chief of the DILG Region 8 Local Government Monitoring and Evaluation Division. (TAC-JDM)
