Handmade, heartmade: Crafting dreams wit Ria Camartin

Ria Camartin, 47, a mother and wife from San Julian, has always had a creative spark. From her early days in elementary school, she discovered a love for creating, turning ordinary materials into something beautiful.
But it was during the pandemic that her passion took on a new purpose. Stuck at home like many others, Ria started making handmade greeting cards. Soon, pencil cases and tote bags followed. Every product is unique, a reflection of her creativity and love for the craft.
“What if I make it more special, something that no one else has?” she thought. And that simple question became the heartbeat of her side hustle.
“Mas special kay iba gud it handmade,” she said, describing the uniqueness of her creations.
Her work is not just about artistry, it is also about giving back. Ria allocates half of her income to buying materials for her next projects, while the other half is used to purchase groceries and essentials for less fortunate families in her community. She began with greeting cards, and since then, her craft has grown, touching both hearts and homes.
Balancing her craft with her career as a government employee, Ria makes it a point to dedicate at least an hour each day to her passion. “It’s made with love, blood, and sweat,” she proudly says when asked what sets her work apart from mass-produced products. “Handmade items have texture, heart, and soul.”
Now, approaching 50, Ria is finally living her dream. “Kaiha ko na hin nga dream, yana ko la ka-realize. Kaulangan ko in i-grab nga opportunity,” she said. For her, the message is clear: life is too short to wait. “Ayaw paghinulat, buhata yana. Do what makes your heart happy.”
Today, Ria Camartin’s creations are more than just handmade products. They are a labor of love, a means of helping others, and a symbol of a dream realized, a reminder that it is never too late to follow your passion.
Currently, she is showcasing and selling her creations at the Agri-Trade Fair, organized by the provincial government, in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry, as part of the celebration of the province’s 60th anniversary. (TAC-JDM)
